Phrasal verbs for beginners
Phrasal verbs sound difficult, but you already know many: wake up, sit down, stand up, turn on. This song is your starter pack.
Everyday phrasal verbs
| Phrasal verb | Meaning |
|---|---|
| wake up | stop sleeping |
| get up | leave the bed |
| turn on / off | start / stop a device |
| put on | wear |
| take off | remove (clothes) |
| sit down / stand up | sit / rise |
| come in | enter |
| go out | leave for fun |
Two grammar patterns
- Inseparable: I woke up at seven. (nothing between verb and particle)
- Separable: Turn the light on or Turn on the light — but with a pronoun only Turn it on.
Why bother?
Native speakers say put on your coat, not "wear your coat", and the plane took off, not "departed". Phrasal verbs are the sound of real, spoken English.
Daily routine challenge: tell your morning with five phrasal verbs: wake up, get up, put on, turn on, go out.
